TURKEY IS UNPREDICTABLE
Turkey cannot be predictable for Armenia, Kiro Manoyan, director of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Bureau’s Political and Hay Dat office said on Friday at a roundtable discussion in Yerevan.
Historian Haik Demoyan, who was invited to participate in the discussion, agreed with Manoyan, who reminded that one of the prerequisites for Turkey’s accession in the European Union is that Turkey should recognize the Republic of Cyprus. Turkey, however, has continuously denied to do so, Manoyan said. But EU did not insist on its decisions and continued the talks with Turkey, he added.
As for the establishment of Armenian-Turkish relations, Manoyan indicated, they are not likely in the near future since Turkey continues to put forward preconditions such as Armenia should stop international efforts of the Armenian Genocide recognition, settle the Karabakh conflict in Azerbaijan’s favor. Armenia, in response, insists on establishing diplomatic relations without preconditions.
Demoyan, in turn said that Turkey is actually conducting an “undeclared war” against Armenia by keeping the border closed and carrying out anti-Armenian propaganda.
“Guides tell tourits in Ani that the people who lived in that city do not exist any longer,” Demoyan said. Manoyan added that this position is nothing new. To gain Europe’s sympathy, Turkey from time to time takes some steps. For example, an Armenian issues conference was allowed to be held in Turkey but then the participants of the conference were harassed by the government. In conclusion, Manoyan said that until there is a Turkish threat, the Russian military base should not be removed from Armenia.
