FM OSKANIAN: THERE WAS PROGRESS IN 2005

Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanian held a news conference on Tuesday to summarize Armenia’s foreign policies activities in 2005.
‘We had a progress in a number of issues regarding our country’s development and security,” Oskanian said. He pointed out that during 2005, the economic growth rates were maintained, constitutional reforms were carried out and that Armenia has continued to integrate with the European family. He also mentioned that positive steps have been made towards the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
“We began the talks under the European Union’s New Neighborhood policy that is to be finalized in 2006,” Oskanian said. “The process will allow to get to the integration stage from the stage of rapprochement.”
Touching upon the Armenian-Turkish relations, Oskanian noted that Turkey continues to put forward preconditions: Armenia should stop pursuing the Armenian genocide issue on the international arena, recognize Turkey’s teritorial integrity and settle the Nagorno Karbakh conflict. Armenia, however, is for the improvement of relations without preconditions, the foreign minister went on saying.
He also mentioned the talks with Russia over the natural gas prices and pointed to Armenia’s inclusion in the Millennium Challenge Project as Armenia’s achievement in 2005.
