POLITICAL COALITION ISSUES STATEMENT OVER CONSTITUTIONAL REFERENDUM RESULTS
The ruling coalition, comprising the Republican Party of Armenia, the Orinats Yerkir Party and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, issued on Nov. 29 a statement over the constitutional amendments referendum. The statement reads in parts.
Dear compatriots With the November 27 constitutional amendments referendum, our country and society entered in a completely new stage of development that gives us great opportunities to implement fundamental democratic reforms meeting European standards.
The referendum is valid because it is apparent that the Nov, 27 referendum outcome correspond to the people’s aspirations in general and reflects its will.
Unfortunately, several political forces tried from the very beginning to devaluate the essence of the constitutional reforms. From day one they attempted to transfer it into a confrontation between the authorities and the opposition, to escalate the situation and cast doubts in the positive outcome of the referendum.
The assessments for the campaign process and referendum can be considered credible if they are exclusively based on documents and conclusions made by relevant structures and mechanisms. Such impartial and authorized structures, for instance the joint observers’ mission of the Council of Europe, have concluded that the conduct of the referendum in general met the international standards and that the violations do not affect the outcome.
However, considering any instance overshadowing such events of state importance as unacceptable, we believe that the mentioned fraud and setbacks should be probed duly, relevant conclusions should be made and those responsible should be punished.
We call on you to restrain from the efforts of breaching the country’s stability and international image. We have to respect the all views expressed in the referendum.
