PRESIDENT KOCHARIAN PROMOTES CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS AT YSU
- President Robert Kocharian made a visit on Thursday to the Yerevan State University to meet with the students and faculty of the Law and International Relations departments. The political parties opposing to the Constitutional amendments would damage Armenia's image, and the European community would conclude that the Armenian people are against the strengthening of democracy.

Kocharian noted that when Armenia was joining the Council of Europe, several of the politicians who currently are campaining against the adoption of the amendments, had approved of the commitments Armenia assumed, including the constituiaontal reform. Among those politicians were Aram Z. Sargisan, then the prime minister, and Artashes Geghamian, the leader of the Azgayin Miabanutiun (National Unity) Party.
He also indicated that saying “no” to the amendments does not mean saying “no” to the authorities as the opposition leaders say, but it would be a “no” to the international image of the country.
Taking a question from a student who asked wouldn’t Kocharian benefit if the amendments fail in the referendum, since he would retain his super powers as a president, Kocharian jokingly noted “Maybe they [the opposition] love the president deep in the heart,” and then added, “The county would lose nothing regardless of the outcome of the referendum but it would miss a chance.”
