'HAMSHEN AND HAMSHEN ARMENIANS' CONFERENCE CONCLUDED IN SOCHI
- A conference titled "Hamshen and Hamshen Armenians" was conducted October 13-15 in south Russian city of Sochi, home to over 100,000 Hamshen Armenians.
The conference was organized by the History Institute of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences in cooperation with the Armenian Revolutionary Federation's (ARF) Moscow Hay Dat office, and with the support of Hamshen Union of the Krasnodar region and the news center Yerkramas.
Scholars from Armenia, Russia, United States and Iran participated in the conference. Also attending the conference were ARF Bureau representative Hrant Margarian, ARF Bureau member and National Assembly Vice-speaker Vahan Hovhannisian, ARF's Moscow Hay Dat Office Director Yura Navoyan, European Armenian Federation Chairwoman Hilda Choboian and ARF Bureau's Hay Dat and Political Affairs Office Director Kiro Manoyan.
The reports made at the conference will be published in four languages -- Armenian, Turkish, Russian and English. The organizers and participates noted that the event had not only a scientific significance but also a practical one since it would bridge all the Hamshen Armenians with Armenia and Diaspora.
Hamshen is a historic Armenian region, currently a part of Turkey. The region was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in 1491. Some Hamshen Armenians adopted Islam, others emigrated to the Russian Empire. Presently, Hamshen Armenians number 400,00 with half of them Muslims. Most of Christian Hamshen Armenians presently reside in Abkhazia and the Krasnodar region of Russia.
