EAF DEMANDS ARMENIAN GENOCIDE ISSUE BE INCLUDED IN EU-TURKEY TALKS
After the European Parliament passed a resolution regarding the start of negotiations with Turkey, European Armenian Federation sent a letter to the EU foreign ministers convened in Luxemburg, reminding them about the European Parliament resolutions and demanding that the Armenian Genocide issue be included in the talks agenda. The letter emphasized that in its September 28, 2005 resolution as well as in June 18, 1987 resolutions, the European Parliament has mentioned that Turkey's recognition of the Armenian Genocide is a precondition for that country's admission to the EU.
The EAF noted that the European Commission promised to discuss the issue of Genocide along with the negotiations process without elaborating on the ways.
"The European Council should instruct the Commission on the ways and mechanisms. If the Council chooses to begin the negotiations without heeding the European Parliament demands, we will be there during the entire process of the negotiations to remind of the leaders' neglect of democracy," EAF Chairwoman Hilda Choboian said.
