EU FOREIGN MINISTERS FAIL TO REACH AGREEMENT ON TURKEY'S EU BID
European foreign ministers failed on Sunday to reach agreement on Turkey's bid to join the European Union.
An intense round of negotiations in Luxembourg broke up shortly before midnight after Austria refused to abandon its demand for Turkey to be offered an "alternative" to full EU membership.
British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw expressed his disappointment but said he hoped that "we may be able to reach agreement." Meanwhile, Cyprus Foreign Minister George Yafoko called on Turkey to open its border with his country immediately after the talks begin. Turkish PM Erdogan said in Ankara that EU should decide whether it wants to be a serious international force or to remain a Christian club forever.
