TURKISH COURT BANS ARMENIAN GENOCIDE CONFERENCE
A Turkish court ruled Thursday that a conference on the Armenian Genocide under the Ottoman Empire should be suspended.
As reported by Yerkir Media, the conference entitled "Ottoman Armenians of an Empire in Decline: Issues of Scientific Responsibility and Democracy," was scheduled to open today at the Bosporus University in Istanbul.
It was originally scheduled to take place in May but it was postponed after the Turkish Justice Minister Cicek said its purpose was to stab Turkey in the back. Following the postponement, opinions were voiced that expressing academic views freely is banned in Turkey. Many believe the Turkish government fears of any mentioning of the Armenian Genocide that it vigorously denies.
The suspension ruling was taken following a claim field by a Turkish lawyer.
