ARMENIAN PRESIDENT, EUROPEAN OFFICIAL DISCUSS EU- ARMENIA RELATIONS
- As part of his working visit to Brussels, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has met EU High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.
The discussion between the two officials focused on the agenda of the EU-Armenia relations. Mutually emphasizing the importance of an enhanced cooperation within the Eastern Partnership format, they addressed the negotiations over the Association Agreement, and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area, as well as the dialogue over facilitating free mobility of people and assisting in the current reforms in Armenia. Reaffirming Armenia's commitment to continue close cooperation with the EU, the president said that the EU-Armenia rapprochement and the European Neighborhood Policy remain a priority task on Armenia's foreign policy agenda.
Both parties attached importance to the high-level mutual visits. They further addressed the May 6 parliamentary election in Armenia, the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement process, and regional developments. The EU official stressed the importance of continuing the electoral reforms, noting that the recent polls were the best in Armenia since the country's gaining independence.
Later today, the president is scheduled to attend the European Democratic Party's summit
