THOUSAND MARCH IN TURKEY TO PROTEST KHOJALU CLAIMS
- Around 1,000 people rallied in Turkey on Sunday as a sign of protest against an Istanbul-hosted demonstration dedicated to the so-called Khojalu massacre. According to the Turkish news agency Dogan, journalists, writers, actors and intellectuals had joined the crowd. At the demonstration on Istanbul's Taksim square last week, the crowd held up posters with anti-Armenian and fascist slogans. But the protesters at yesterday's rally were making calls for friendship between nations, and condemning hatred. After a procession that lasted about an hour, a Turkish journalist, Yashar Guven, delivered a speech, slamming the anti-Armenian statements and threats at last week's protest. "Statements full of hatred and threats against the Armenians and all other nations were being voiced here last week under the pretext of the 'Khojalu genocide'. But Khhojalu was not the case. Because of the pro-Armenian bill [adopted] in France, the Government is now instilling hatred against the Armenian nation. But we will not leave the Armenians alone" he said, condemning fascism, nationalism and chauvinism. Speaking at the protest, Mahud Tanal of the Democratic-Republican Party, said that Prime Minister Erdogan's calls for revenge contribute to hostility and dissidence. "Having gathered here, we are calling for peace," he said.
