INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY MARKED IN ARMENIA
- The Yerevan Institute of Ancient Manuscripts (Matenadaran) is hosting a ceremony dedicated to International Mother Language Day. Among the attendees are Armenian Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan, Chairman of the Union of Writers Levon Ananyan, scholars and cultural workers. Gayane Soghomonyan, Head of the Education Department, Yerevan Municipality, read out a message by Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan. An academic conference will be held at the Department of Journalism, Yerevan State University. Armenian Premier Tigran Sargsyan and a number of government officials will visit Mesrob Mashtots' grave in Oshakan. International Mother Language Day is an observance held annually on 21 February worldwide to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. It was first announced by UNESCO on 17 November 1999. Its observance was also formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution establishing 2008 as the International Year of Languages.
