JANUARY 27 INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY
- In 2005 the UN General Assembly designated January 27—the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau—as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On this annual day of commemoration, every member state of the UN has an obligation to honor the victims of the Nazi era and to develop educational programs to help prevent future genocides. This year's theme is Children and the Holocaust, according to a statement on the International Holocaust Museum's website. For this year's commemoration, the Museum will host a candle-lighting ceremony on Friday, January 27. In addition, from April 15 through April 22, the Museum will lead the United States in observing the Days of Remembrance, the nation's annual commemoration of the Holocaust.
