ARMENIAN COMMUNISTS MUST UNITE - ARMENIAN-RUSSIAN UNION LEADER
- Robert Aharonyan, Chairman of the Armenian-Russian Union NGO, called for joining the three communist parties of Armenia. Specifically, he has appealed to the United Communist Party of Armenia (UCPA), Renewed Communist Party of Armenia (RCPA), Progressive United Communist Party of Armenia (PUCPA) for forming an alliance and participate in the forthcoming parliamentary elections. "The parties have been discussing the issue of uniting for seven years. But their leaders' ambitions preclude unification because they have to decide on which of them is going to be leader," Aharonyan told reporters. According to him, after the USSR Communist Party's collapse in 1990s, an end was put to "real opposition" in Armenia. So Armenia's communist parties need to unite. "We do not benefit from it in any way. We only want the political arena to be properly formed. I must be a struggle between ideologies rather than for posts. All the parties have identical ideologies," Aharonyan said. If Armenia's communists fail to unite and run for parliament, Aharonyan will vote for the party whose program will envisage development of relations with Russia.
