FRENCH LAWMAKER EXPLAINS REASONS BEHIND DRAFTING GENOCIDE DENIAL BILL
- French lawmaker Valerie Boyer, the author of the French National Assembly approved bill penalizing the denial of the Armenian Genocide, has explained the reasons behind her move. In a massage on her Facebook wall, Boyer said that the ethnic Armenians residing in France have a right to protect themselves against the people spotting the memory of their ancestors. "This law is aimed at punishing all those who question fact of the Armenian Genocide," she said. "The Turkish authorities disrespect first of all the sovereignty of France. What I mean is interference in our domestic affairs." Boyer noted that none of the countries that recognized the Armenian Genocide (Russia, Canada, Argentina, Italy, Sweden and Germany) has deteriorated its relations with Turkey. "Of course, there are always more important issues that need legalizations, but if both he right-wing and left-wing Republicans have reached an agreement over the issue, why not develop it? Isn't France a country of human rights," she added.
