. SMALL CROWD OF EVICTEES DEMANDS AUTHORITIES’ RESIGNATION
Several dozen residents who joined the movement for civil disobedience organized a protest near the Presidential Palace on Tuesday demanding the resignation of current authorities. The “Brotherhood of Liberation Struggle” and “Armenian Mothers” organizations as well as former and current residents of Yerevan districts that have become a target for major redevelopment projects participated in the protest with banners calling for civil disobedience. Protesting women had brought a two-meter broom with which they were ready ‘to sweep the current authorities.’ Police barred protestors from gathering near the Presidential Palace, advising them to protest across the street, but the demonstrators refused to comply with this demand. “Women are here? Are you afraid of women too?” one protestor asked police workers. The protestors called on the president to come out to see them at least for five minutes. Failing to get a response from the president, the demonstrators began to call for his resignation. “My impression is that the people and high-ranking officials are in two opposite camps. We have become their enemies, but they live at our expense,” one woman complained. Member of the Council of the “Armenian Mothers” organization Susanna Harutiunian says that the bill on property confiscation for “state and public needs”, which was adopted in the second reading in parliament last week, threatens any person to become an evictee in the same way. “We urge everyone -- students, housewives, elderly pensioners – to join in our demand that this outrageous bill should not become a law, because this way they [authorities] will legalize their illegal actions,” Harutiunian said. To avoid possible clashes with police protestors decided to leave, but promised to return. A meeting of supporters of the movement for civil disobedience will take place on November 23 during which it will become clear what forces support and join this movement.
