UN RESOLUTION CONDEMNS HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES IN IRAN
- The UN General Assembly's rights committee has passed a resolution condemning human rights abuses in Iran, Radio Liberty reported. The resolution, which was introduced by Canada, received 86 votes in favor, 32 against, and 59 abstentions. It condemned "torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, including flogging and amputations" carried out by Iranian authorities. It also deplored a "dramatic increase" in the use of the death penalty, particularly against minors and those aged under 18 when capital punishment was ordered. Mohammad Javad Larijani, a foreign-policy adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, told the committee: "The substance of [this] resolution is absolutely unfounded and a shameful fabrication of baseless allegations and totally preposterous." The nonbinding resolution is to be confirmed with a vote in a General Assembly plenary session next month.
