Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanyan sent a letter to Agos newspaper editorial staff in relation to one year of Hrant Dinks murder. I must confess that in the course of my tenure in office I have been shocked twice. The first was in 1999 when the stability of Armenia was endangered by terrorists and the second was last year when I received a telephone call informing about the death of Hrant Dink. In both cases, they were invasions not against persons but against ideas, the ministers letter says. Oskanyan mentioned that Dinks murder was an invasion against the effort to build the Turkish government on democratic principle. In September, 2006, when Dink spoke at Armenia-Diaspora conference, his address was that as the members of European family, Armenia and Turkey can have normal relations since even those that do not want may try to seek ways of dialogue in Turkey. It was pleasant to hear that since our wishes were the same, the letter says. Oskanyan mentions that Dink was proud to have two identities Turkish and Armenia and he was insulted and angry when he was blamed in insult to Turkish identity for trying to find edges of conciliation between the two. The foreign minister of Armenia expressed his opinion that the cruelty of Hrant Dinks murder, its impunity and violence serve several political aims. First, to reduce the interest of Turkey in Europe, this is what some in the Turkish political circles want. Second, to frighten the Armenian and other minorities in Turkey so that they do not pursue their civil and human rights. Third, to frighten those Turks who start to study this complicated and fragile issue with all sincerity, the letter says. Hrant Dink was assassinated on January 19, 2007 in front of the editorial office of Agos newspaper in Istanbul. Dink was awarded by the president of Armenia after his death for his contribution in the recognition of the Armenian genocide.
