AJK APPEALS NOT TO ELECT EITHER PRESENT OR PAST AUTHORITIES BUT DOES NOT NOMINATE ITS OWN CANDIDATE
The board of National Democratic Party (AJK), led by Shavarsh Kocharyan, released a statement today which says in particular: Being a semi-established, authoritarian country, the Republic of Armenia stands in front of crucial choice either to develop as a democratic state, which is a precondition for effective management of external threats and internal challenges, or to strengthen authoritarianism... Presidential elections 2008 do not solve the problem of change of power since the center of power has been shifted to the parliament and government with new constitutional amendments. However, the quality of the elections, the campaign and the results will significantly determine which way the country will develop. Under the conditions of lack of single candidate among the opposition, the competition is mainly between forces representing former and present authorities. This contributes to the victory of the representative of the parliamentary majority which will make the power single centered and, consequently, uncontrollable and will tend to ignore political forces and public opinion, which in its case will be an additional obstacle for the development of democracy in the country. The awareness of the situation and its correct assessment makes the opposition's unification a must... In case of the victory of a single candidate from the opposition, the president will become a counter-balance to the majority... The past authority cannot be such an alternative since he was the one who formed the authoritarian system and anti-democratic traditions in the country.... AJK's primary aim has been the establishment of democracy and rule of law in Armenia. AJK does not seek to nominate its own candidate in order to make process of unification more effective. AJK will support the one who will be guided by the establishment of the democratic state based on national ideology.''
