ARMENIAN CHESS PLAYERS FACE UNCOMFORTABLE SITUATION IN TURKEY
At the recently concluded 12th chess team competition in Turkey, Mika-Yerevan girls team trainer Ashot Vardpetyan said that this years team had a hard time living up to the results last years winning team had. We remind that this years Mika-Yerevan team earned third place and a bronze medal. Monaco and Russia grabbed the first two places. For us, it makes no difference what team we play. We played against two Turkish teams. They were ready to play us, but we won, Vardanyan told journalists at a meeting today. In his words, this year, as compared to other years, the flags of victorious countries were not raised. Vardanyan doesnt rule out the possibility of this happening due to the fact that Armenia was one of the countries which earned a medal. Concerning the less-successful boys team named Bank King, the trainer thinks the reason for their lack of success might have been tied to the uncomfortable situation the team faced upon arrival in Turkey. We were all staying in five-star hotels, and the boys room didnt correspond to this rating, Vardanyan informed. In his words, the organizers didnt solve this problem, and the sportsmen were transferred to another hotel. This might in fact have influenced their playing, he added.
