ARPI VARDANYAN: “TURKEY AFRAID OTHERS WILL FOLLOW SUIT”
Turkey says lives could be endangered, or the American economy could suffer, or trade between the US and Turkey could decrease, Arpi Vardanyan, director of the American-Armenian Congress, said about Turkeys reaction to the passage of House Resolution No. 106. She added that if Turkey desires for American lives to be endangered, that they shouldnt forget that American is a very important partner for them. Turkey has also threatened France, and other countries, but nothing came of those threats. Perhaps there were a few temporary problems, but relations returned to normal and even improved, she said. She told about a film they had produced about the Armenian Genocide, and about how 10 states had recognized the Genocide, yet during the past seven years, in each case, the states had maintained good economic relations with Turkey, with trade between the states and Turkey increasing. To the question of why Turkey is so upset about the foreign relation committees decision, being it doesnt have the force of law, she answered, Turkey understands well that if the resolution becomes law that other countries will stand in line and recognize the Genocide. Talking about the American-Turkish commission directors viewpoint that this would be just the first step in eventual demands for territory or financial reparations, she said that Turkey in fact has that fear. There will be those who make this sort of demand, but whether or not anything will come of them, I dont know, Vardanyan said.
