EU HOPES FOR PROGRESS IN ARMENIAN-TURKISH RELATIONS
- The first-ever Armenia-EU meeting at the level of EU Political and Security Committee Troika was held in Brussels on July 2, the RA MFA press office reported. The format of the meeting initiated by the Armenian side is an important EU mechanism for contacts with partner states. On the same day, similar meetings with representatives of Georgia and Azerbaijan were held. The Armenian delegation was led by Armenia’s representative to the EU, Ambassador Vigen Chitechyan. The EU sent for discussions representatives from France - the presiding country, EU Council Secretariat, European Commission and Czechia, which will assume the rotating presidency in the EU after France. EU Envoy for the South Caucasus, Mr Peter Semneby was also present at the meeting. Stressing the importance of measures undertaken for normalization of internal political situation, European officials confirmed willingness to assist the reform in the republic. Much attention was devoted to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict and normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations. Ruling out resolution of the Karabakh problem by use of force, the EU reiterated support to efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group on the basis on Madrid proposals and welcomed Armenia’s steps for normalization of relations with neighboring Turkey.
