PM SARGSYAN: ARMENIAN SOCIETY WILL BE THE STRICTEST JUDGE IN STRUGGLE AGAINST CORRUPTION
- Representatives of civil society organizations, states agencies, international organizations, the private sector and the media discussed Armenia’s international obligations to fight corruption during Armenia’s first Anti-Corruption Forum held in Yerevan today. The forum served an arena for discussions between interested parties and the Anti-Corruption Strategy Monitoring Commission on the current state of international obligations, especially as they relate to the new Anti-Corruption Strategy being developed by the government. “The government has set itself the task of fighting corruption, a serious problem in our society. I call on the public and opposition to take part in development of the government’s Anti-Corruption Strategy,” Armenia’s Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said, adding, “The population will be regularly informed of the results of monitorings and will be the strictest judge in the process.” In January 2004 Armenia joined the Council of Europe Groups of States Against Corruption (GRECO); in May 2005 the republic signed United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).

Today in Armenian history- 1804 The 5000-strong Russian force beseiges Yerevan.
- 1833 Birth of Grigor Chilinkiryan (public figure and translator) in Smyrna. He died in 1923.
- 1833 Death of Ghookas Inchichyan (armenologist and geographer) in Venice. He was born in 1758.
- 1840 An earthquake (Richter Scale: 7.0) occurs at Ararat and affects a 5000 sq. km. area. It kills 1000 people.
- 1915 Russian forces retreat, resulting in a massive flight of Armenians from Van and Vaspoorakan. There are huge losses when the Turkish army massacres the remnants of the Armenian population.
- 1921 The Red Army reaches Goris.
