- «До 11 сентября 2001 года терроризм был чисто абстрактной проблемой. Только после разрушения башен Всемирного торгового центра в Нью-Йорке мы осознали важность борьбы с террором», - заявил на международной конференции «Обеспечение подготовки к борьбе с международным терроризмом» в столице Армении начальник отдела оборонного сотрудничества департамента оборонной политики и планирования НАТО Джордж Катсирдакис. По его словам, с 2001 года в НАТО стал действовать специальный комитет для обмена информацией и разведданными. «Однако сегодня террористы пользуются демократическими свободами и современными технологиями. Не исключено, что они могут получить доступ к оружию массового поражения. Появился и кибер-терроризм. Поэтому нам нужно объединить усилия для борьбы с этим злом, другого пути нет. Причем ответ мирового сообщества терроризму должен быть многократным и по всем направлениям. Если террористы действуют по всему миру, мы должны поступать так же», - подчеркнул представитель Альянса. Джордж Катсирдакис также отметил, что согласно статье 5 Устава НАТО о самообороне, осуществляются морские операции «Active endeavor», упомянув также операции против боевиков «Аль-Кайеды» в Афганистане. «НАТО тесно сотрудничает в этом вопросе с международными организациями, однако я должен заметить, что международный терроризм будет с нами долго», - сказал он.
