THE ELECTION LIST OF THE CONGRESS

Stepan Minasyan, member of the People's Party of Armenia, told the Haykakan Zhamanak Daily that the Armenian National Congress list will be headed by Levon Ter-Petrosyan and Stepan Demirchyan, the leader of the PPA. Earlier the press had reported that Demirchyan demanded the significant presence of the PPA in this list otherwise they would leave the Congress. Besides, information was reported that a similar demand had been set forth by the Hnchak Party.The coordinator of the Congress Levon Zurabyan says it is a difficult task to make this list. "A bloc of 18 parties is something unprecedented. It is difficult to agree on this list. We did the important thing - the parties decided to establish a bloc without discussing the list. It means for them principles are beyond political trade. The authorities had a great expectation that we would not reach an agreement. It's OK, we will disappoint them."Hence, Zurabyan hints that the government is trying to split the Congress. On the other hand, if the Congress is split, it is difficult to predict if the parties forming it will reach the threshold of 5%, including the "party" which will be headed by Levon Ter-Petrosyan.The Congress is facing a complicated problem. On the one hand, it must meet the requirements of the parties forming it, on the other hand, it must make a party list which will reflect the principles and ideals declared by the Congress. In a certain sense, this is a difficult issue because the number of party leaders is 18. And it is about 20% with 90 proportional seats.Another issue for the Congress is the ambitions of parties. "The party list must incorporate the forces and individuals who had the best contribution to the establishment and activities of the Congress and the improvement of the reputation of the Congress," Stepan Minasyan told the Haykakan Zhamanak. This circumstance is a subject of internecine controversies. Who will measure whose contribution is the best, that the of the political prisoners, young people working day and night who often endanger their life or ambitious party leaders who built their monumental images on the basis of these drawbacks?A difficult task is awaiting the Congress to prove that for them "principles are beyond political trade", as Levon Zurabyan announced.
