YEREVAN ANSWERED PUTIN

As we learned from the message issued by the National Security Council, Arthur Baghdasaryan, NSC Secretary met on January 19 with the regional head of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Canan Atilgan. Among other issues, the interlocutors discussed also the prospect of establishing a Caucasus-Europe international political club in Yerevan. The political activities of the National Security Council of Armenia and particularly its secretary are worth little attention but there are moments when these activities fit into a very interesting context. The aforementioned event is one of these moments considering the fact that earlier on that day it was stated about the opening of another club called Putin in Armenia the initiator of which is Andranik Nikoghosyan from the CIS Youth Union. Andranik Nikoghosyan stated that a group of Armenian young people had requested the creation of this club which they met. Against the background of the creation of this club the meeting and the agreement between the NSC Secretary and Canan Atilgan becomes interesting. In this context, the agreement to establish the Caucasus-Europe Club can be considered as the response of official Yerevan to the creation of the Putin Club. Apparently, Yerevan cannot yet dare to publicly disagree with steps under the name of Putin but just manages to issue messages, in the form of the Caucasus-Europe Club. This is not bad either, especially taking into account that it is difficult to respond to a non-official initiative at an official visit. The discussion on the creation of the Europe-Caucasus Club seems the most suitable response official Yerevan to Putin. HAKOB BADALYAN
