SERZH SARGSYAN'S ANSWER TO ALIYEV

The presidential office released the transcript of Serzh Sargsyan's answers to the questions of reporters during the joint press conference with the Polish President. Particularly, in regard to the possible EU-Karabakh cooperation mentioned by the reporter of Interfax, Serzh Sargsyan said: "Democracy is an absolute value, and in this regard, we appreciate any assistance to democracy. Therefore, we will be happy if the EU assists Nagorno-Karabakh to strengthen democratic institutions, institutional building. The citizens of NKR, certainly, expect this assistance because they have been on this track for 17 years. Elections compliant with the international standards are held in Karabakh, and both they and us are proud of it. During the parliamentary elections in Nagorno-Karabakh, all the political forces of Nagorno-Karabakh had the opportunity to be in parliament. Three presidential elections have been held, three presidents have been elected, and none of them inherited presidency. Also, this is the reason why the elected authorities of Nagorno-Karabakh never make offensive statements on the Azerbaijani people, which is honor for them, unlike the leadership of the neighboring country which is able to make articulate speeches but is unable to hide its hatred. And it is known that a person full of hatred can't make good, normal decisions, and in this context, the EU assistance is simply a necessity for Nagorno-Karabakh."
The Public Television of Poland asked: "Is there a possibility for a lasting and peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict after the fiasco of Kazan? If yes, what are Armenia's demands that Azerbaijan must meet to reach a lasting settlement?"
"Certainly, I wouldn't call the meeting in Kazan a fiasco, though, as I said, both the international community and us had considerable expectations from that meeting. Simply there happened what was going to happen, and what I mentioned at the PACE. I mean the absence of a corresponding atmosphere, and first of all this atmosphere must improve. One can't poison one's own people every day. I don't know, for instance, did you track the international news yesterday? Do you know what pronouncements the president of Azerbaijan made on the Armenian people? Is it normal to hear such things from a person, let alone a head of state? The people of Karabakh, and generally the Armenian people have one demand, the problem must be solved in accordance with the international law, and the provisions of this law are set down in the document referred to as "the principles of Madrid" which was proposed to the sides by the co-chairs of the Minsk Group - the United States, France and Russia. We don't have other demands. In other words, our demands are harmonious to the demands of the international community," Serzh Sargsyan said.
