DASHNAKTSUTYUN WILL CONSIDER THE RESIGNATION OF CHIEF OF POLICE
The leader of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun’s faction Hrair Karapetyan condemned the attempt on the life of the mayor of Gyumri Vardan Ghukasyan, which caused the death of his attendants. Hrair Karapetyan said in a news conference on April 4 at the Pastark Club that the ARF Dashnaktsutyun condemns any act of terrorism against Armenians in Armenia. The reporter of Lragir.am tried to find out if it means that the ARF does not condemn terror against foreigners. “Generally, we are against terror. Our country has joined over 40 international anti-terrorist conventions. We all voted for these conventions, both the pro-government and opposition members of parliament, which means we cannot sponsor or propagate terror,” Hrair Karapetyan says, stressing with regard to Hay Dat, which involved episodes of terrorism, that it is part of the national liberation movement, and according to Hrair Karapetyan is not related to terrorism.
The leader of the ARF faction says he was the author of the bill on anti-terror mechanisms. Namely, Hrair Karapetyan says it is important to set up a permanent anti-terrorist organization, but he deleted this provision from the law when the ARF Dashnaktsutyun was accused of likelihood to create a security agency under its control. Hrair Karapetyan says such an agency is necessary because terror should not only be exposed but also prevented. It does not mean, however, that the ARF Dashnaktsutyun is dissatisfied with the performance of the law enforcement agencies. At least, with regard to the question that the security agencies are unable to not only prevent but also expose the recent assassinations and attempts, he said the law enforcement agencies cannot be accused of bad performance.
The leader of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun faction reminds about their initiative to hold hearings with the leaders of the law-enforcement and security agencies to discuss the recent assassinations. “We held a debate at the parliament, and the leaders of the security agencies assured that they make sufficient efforts to prevent and expose similar crimes,” Hrair Karapetyan says. He has a similar opinion on the investigation of the assassination of Shahen Hovasapyan, the head of the Department of Investigations of the Tax Service. Shahen Hovasapyan was a member of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun, and the party has stated for many times to follow the investigation. Therefore, it is interesting if the ARF Dashnaktsutyun is satisfied with the course of the investigation.
“We are satisfied with the performance, the efforts of the relevant agencies. Of course, it is very difficult to expose such crimes but I think it is unfair to accuse the agencies of bad performance. People really work day and night, and I hope that soon the cause and the killers of this ferocious assassination will be exposed,” Hrair Karapetyan says, adding that the other cases should not be an exception.
Hrair Karapetyan said the president of Armenia held a consultation with different agencies and suggested waiting for the results.
The reporters told Hrair Karapetyan that the Republican Party is said to demand the resignation of the Chief of the Police if the attempt on the mayor of Gyumri is not exposed soon. They asked Hrair Karapetyan if the ARF will join the Republican Party. It is not certain whether the Republican Party will demand the resignation, if it does, we will think about it, Hrair Karapetyan said.
