REFUSE TO MEET HAMMARBERG AND GO ON ONE DAY PROTEST

The political prisoners arrested for March 1 made a statement which runs: “Tens of thousands of representatives of the opposition underwent political persecution as a result of the bloodshed of March 1 which stopped the peaceful protests and rallies following the outrageous presidential election on this year’s February 19, illegally imposed state of emergency and other illegalities. For the same reason we have been in prison for months. Over this time we discovered realities which first aroused surprise, then frustration and finally anger. It is first of all the activities of the Council of Europe a member of which the Republic of Armenia is. Over this period the Council of Europe has failed to fulfill its obligations to the people of Armenia to reinforce democracy and democratic institutions and acted in the contrary direction. Having a complete database of fraud and undeniable breaches revealed through thorough monitoring of the pre-election period, the voting and the post-election period, it accepted the published results of the election. This strange behavior encouraged the regime to clamp down severely on peaceful protestors and perpetrate bloodshed. Despite dozens of official reports, demands in statements and resolutions of the European organizations, nothing changes in Armenia, and the PACE has already put off for several times the deadline for the regime in Armenia to meet its demands. The impression is that the documents are adopted for the public, and the government is told something else backstage. We the undersigned political prisoners, considering the abovementioned, also highly appreciating Mr. Hammarberg’s activities as the CoE human rights commissioner, especially his objective reports about the events in Armenia and their demand to set free the political prisoners immediately, apologizing and assuring him that our steps are not against his personality and are an expression of dissatisfaction and protest addressed to the European bureaucratic structures, announce: With profound respect for Mr. Hammarberg and appreciation of his conscientious activities, we refuse to meet him.
