THE WEED OF THE ARMENIAN POLITICS
- The Armenian minister of defense Serge Sargsyan has found himself in a complicated situation. His desire to play a central role in the political processes eventually produced the opposite effect; presently he not only has not increased his political role but his position is gradually weakening both inside the country and in the world. Perhaps he should not have made so much efforts, televised TV series on problems which are and are not related to his duties, and readily performed external “challenges”. However, the events took a regular course, and Serge’s example could teach a lesson to the political forces and figures. The minister of defense first stated readiness to return the territories allegedly to please the West. However, even the experts who have been tracking the settlement of the Karabakh conflict know that the West is not interested in the territories, and in fact there was no approval or support from different Western institutions. Instead, these statements cost the reputation of Serge Sargsyan and gave rise to a surge of protest in the society. On seeing that there is no “use” from the West besides very definite requirements, Serge Sargsyan tried to get the support of the Russians though a few economic deals. However, the Russian party also assumed a hard stance and Serge Sargsyan cannot expect support except for army matters. Moreover, Russia conveyed through the former defense minister Ivanov that Serge Sargsyan is not viewed as the future president of Armenia.

Afterwards the minister of defense vigorously got down to internal consolidation, among a very definite class, of course. He became and made the “outstanding” representatives of the business corps of Armenia Republican, which was named “criminal corps” by the society. Serge Sargsyan took up control over the Council of the Republican Party, which afterwards passed political decisions which made the new Republicans doubt if they should rely on the minister of defense if since his affiliation with the Republican Party he has brought defeats and retreat, namely the local elections in Ajapniak and Nalbandyan. However, not only the Republican Party but also Serge Sargsyan faced up to trouble, who realized that the class who had his guarantee are impatient and do not want to stand in line, and agree to stand in line only if they are the first. The minister of defense realized that it is impossible to keep the promises to the business corps and the generals of the army. Their appetite and taste remains the same, while in the world new gastronomic approaches are used to generate new tastes. Meanwhile, in his sphere they perhaps expect only Hummer cars from Serge Sargsyan.
Meanwhile, serious processes are underway in Armenia, and the adequate reaction, the Armenian foreign minister Vardan Oskanyan would say, would be painful for the political and economic elite of Armenia. But since the Armenian political elite are mostly composed of political traders and impostors, which is already inadequate to the reality, it is not realistic to expect an adequate reaction to the reality. These figures feel instinctively that their link to the reality is wearing thin and it becomes impossible to sustain it with old methods. However, due to unawareness of new methods the sphere, including the government, the opposition, and the society in general, has appeared in uncertainty. In the field of the government, evidence to this is the party ticket anguish which still tortures the government majority even after the ticket has been drafted. In the field of the opposition, evidence to this uncertainty is the lack of a mechanism of struggle for power besides a common front.
It seemed that in the new situation in Armenia the opposition should have been more flexible to work out a strategy and tactics to match the ongoing process. Instead the society witnessed the efforts of separate opposition figures to hold on to politics through old methods. For some forces, such as the Communist Party, Stepan Demirchyan, Artashes Geghamyan, Serge Sargsyan’s “scheme” is noticeable: to make them face disappearance from the political sphere through external pledges. The same happened in every election: the semi-criminal sets in Russia, which want status quo of the government in Armenia, provide money to “guarantee” the entry of these forces to parliament. But now is different.
It seems that instead of plunging into the panic of uncertainty the opposition or the government only needed to perceive the logic of the ongoing change. It must be easy to understand. The endless failure of the pro-government and opposition forces makes it clear that the vector of actions should change its direction, which would be enough to bring the public together. Meanwhile, the political forces continue to fail, which means they do not learn from Serge Sargsyan’s tactics but imitate him. Meanwhile, this is a disaster for the public since sergesargsyans multiply.
