ARMENIAN GOVERNMENT SCRUTINIZES U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT REPORT

Official Yerevan is scrutinizing the U.N. Department of State report on human rights practices, which gives a critical evaluation of the state of human rights in Armenia, on March 9 the Armenian foreign minister Vardan Oskanyan said. In answer to the question whether the report is objective, Vardan Oskanyan said: “It points to the progress that has been made, and criticizes the shortcomings, the disadvantages, but in fact there are also mistakes which we will present to the U.S. State Department. On some issues, the approaches are subjective. But there are also notable observations, criticism, which should be focused on,” Vardan Oskanyan says.
He said the document of the State Department should be viewed as a third eye on us which gives an evaluation from the outside. Vardan Oskanyan said he cannot judge the objectivity or subjectivity of the report because it has not undergone full analysis yet. “You see, sometimes it is very painful when one makes tremendous efforts for progress and expects the appreciation of the international community, and the opposite happens, one undergoes strictures, stemming from subjective evaluations,” Vardan Oskanyan says. And the fact that official Yerevan opposes to these evaluations is evidence that these reports are taken seriously.
