ALL-ARMENIAN MOVEMENT PRIDE OF PLACE ON YERKIR MEDIA

From February 1 to 28 Yerevan Press Club monitored the programs on H1, H2, ALM, Armenia, Shant, Yerkir Media, Kentron channels from 18:00 to 24:00 every day to find out whether the parties have equal opportunities to present their political stance and programs.
Kentron TV offered a more lively coverage of the political situation before the parliamentary election. It is followed by Yerkir Media, H2, H1, Shant. There is less politics on Armenia TV. From the beginning of 2007 Armenia does not hold political talk shows, only Serge Sargsyan, the chair of the Council of the Republican Party, minister of defense, was an exception. ALM is a special case. On the one hand, most political shows are on this channel. On the other hand, 85.5 percent of political programs is the share of the head of the ALM Holding and the People’s Party Tigran Karapetyan. During the political programs on these seven channels the Republican Party, Bargavach Hayastan and the ARF Dashnaktsutyun were mentioned more frequently than the other parties. The Republican Party is the first on H1, Armenia TV, H2. ARF is the first on Yerkir Media. Barvavach Hayastan on Kentron. It is notable that the ARF’s coalition partner, the Republican Party, is in the seventh place by appearance on Yerkir Media and comes after the All-Armenian Movement, the Democratic Party, the National Democratic Alliance.
The YPC experts say some parties appear on TV rarely because they avoid interviews where they may be asked undesirable questions, and try to use airtime for their needs rather than the interest of the society. Meanwhile, Aram Zaven Sargsyan’s Republic Party, Aram Karapetyan’s Nor Jamanakner and Raffi Hovannisian’s Heritage Party almost did not appear on TV, there was no reporting on their news conferences, no interviews were held with their representatives. YPC notices that there is also a lack of attention towards those NGOs which criticize the government over the election and democratic reforms.
