173 CANDIDATES FOR 41 SEATS

Nomination of presidential candidates for the parliamentary election on May 12 is over. 173 candidates will run for parliament from 41 constituencies. On April 7 it will be clear who will continue, who will not be registered, who will manage to withdraw their candidacy. It is already an old tradition in Armenia, in five out of 41 constituencies there is only one candidate. Hrant Grigoryan, the brother of the Armenian deputy minister of defense Manvel Grigoryan, will have no opponents in electoral district 20. In electoral district 32 Republican Surik Poghosyan is the sole candidate. From 27 and 28 the alternativeless candidates of the Bargavach Hayastan Party, Melik Manukyan and Gagik Tsarukyan will run for parliament. In electoral district 7 Samvel Alexanyan, Gagik Tsarukyan’s friend, is the candidate. Both the European organizations and the chair of the Central Electoral Commission Garegin Azaryan have stated that this is not an expression of democracy.
60 candidates are businessmen, 40 are members of parliament, 39 are unemployed. 28 political parties will run for parliament but only 19 have nominated candidates from constituencies. The Republican Party nominated the highest number of candidates – 25. The leaders of this political party, the leader of the party and the chair of the council of the party, will not run for parliament from constituencies. The Bargavach Hayastan party has nominated three majority candidates, including the leader of the party Gagik Tsarukyan. The Dashink Party, the Christian Democrats, the Hzor Hayrenik, the Progressive Party of Armenia, the Liberal Progressive Party of Armenia, the National Democratic Alliance, the Democratic Way Party, the United Progressive Communist Party of Armenia, the Marxist Party of Armenia have nominated their leaders. The Christian Democratic Party and the Marxist Party nominated only their leaders. The Orinats Yerkir Party also has nominated a high number of majority candidates – 15. the All-Armenan Movement has nominated 7, the Youth Party 6, the National Unity 4, the ARF Dashnaktsutyun 1. The highest number of candidates is in electoral district 4: Hrair Karapetyan, ARF, Aram Manukyan, All-Armenian Movement, Zohrab Zohrabyan, the non-partisan candidate of the Republican Party, Hairapet Hairapetyan, Bargavach Hayastan, Nshan Vagharshakyan, non-partisan.
Two of the four candidates in electoral district 10 are known to the public: the leader of the Christian Democratic Party Khosrov Harutiunyan and a businessman, Member of Parliament Khachatur Sukiasyan. The vice president of Narek Ltd. owned by Khachatur Sukiasyan will run for parliament from the same constituency. The owner of Vedi Alco, Member of Parliament Manvel Ghazaryan was nominated from electoral district 18 in Ararat. His opponent is the vice president of Vedi Alco Armen Ghazaryan. Republican Hakob Hakobyan will run from electoral district 19, but the Republican Party supports Sedrak (Seyran Saroyan), a non-partisan retired general.
