7 PECULIARITIES OF ELECTIONS

Member of Parliament Hranush Hakobyan shared the 7 peculiarities of the upcoming parliamentary election on March 2 at the Friday Club.
First, the amended Constitution which highlights the role of the parliament. Second, the amended Electoral Code, compliant with the international standards. Third, the commitment to a fair and free election assumed by Armenia on joining the New Neighbors Policy. Four, the attitude of the society towards elections. The voters know what each government agency is supposed to do. Surveys show that the voters will be active. Five, the representatives of both the government and the opposition have stated that it is necessary to display good faith and make joint efforts to hold an objective election. Six, the international organizations are interested in our election. Seven, the Crime Code of Armenia provides for a more severe punishment for electoral fraud now seven years in prison instead of the former two years. Hranush Hakobyan thinks it will make everyone treat the problems related to the election more seriously.
Meanwhile, the European organizations say in Armenia no case of prosecution of electoral fraud has been reported. What’s the point in instituting more severe punishments, we asked her? She said the Office of Public Prosecutor has reported 15 cases related to local and national elections. “I cannot consider this information as false. If we manage to solve two problems, prevent ballot stuffing and guarantee honest counting of votes, we will not have to consider punishment, we will think about a fair election.”
