BOGGED DOWN IN ETERNAL PRESENT
- The important peculiarity of the political momentum, as Vardan Oskanyan complementing the Armenians and the world refers to it, is that nobody knows what will happen tomorrow. By saying tomorrow I do not mean March 1, the first day in spring but generally spring, summer, autumn and especially winter which will be the last of Robert Kocharyan’s presidency. The question what will happen worries even Robert Kocharyan and Serge Sargsyan who have been traditionally referred to as the “clairvoyants” of the Armenian political (?) sphere because these two men have always known, or at least the others believe that they have always known what to do the next day. Moreover, the political sphere, both the opposition and the pro-government, has always believed that Robert Kocharyan have not only known what would happen tomorrow but decided on their own what to do. However, everything vanishes with the passing day. The political forces start doubting both the knowledge and the ability to determine the future. To dispel doubts they need to offer facts to the political sphere that future is in their hands. But as soon as Robert Kocharyan decided to offer something like proofs to the public, Serge Sargsyan does the same right away. And doubts become deeper.
Meanwhile, the secret of their longevity is undoubtability. Nobody has doubted them so far. In other words, they have suspected them of everything, including October 27, Meghri, Karabakh, presenting the country to the Russians, but they have never doubted that they know today and tomorrow. And it was their advantage, their prerogative, because whatever happened in the country was ascribed to their scenario, their idea. The opposition has accused them of their failure, the pro-government forces have ascribed their luck to them. It rained because Robert Kocharyan and Serge Sargsyan had wished so, the rainbow appeared in the sky because Kocharyan and Sargsyan had wished so. The myth of doubtlessness of their ideas has replaced not only the public law but also the laws of nature by them in the political and public consciousness.
However, the same prerogative will harm Robert Kocharyan and Serge Sargsyan. When they fail to display the visible future to the political sphere, they break the rules of the game they have established themselves. Although they have never offered future, they have even obstructed building of future, flinging the country into the bog of the eternal present. Now they will also get bogged down because the burden of the Shaman is heavy and responsible. If he cannot foresee tomorrow, he has no advantages over his tribesmen, even if they do nothing to the expired Shaman, at least they will not trust him any more. The problem is that the absence of a shaman worries the political sphere for another reason. Everyone worries about who might know, be responsible for tomorrow, deal with the previous agreements if Robert and Serge do not know what will happen tomorrow. And the future will remain in the hands of Robert Kocharyan and Serge Sargsyan as long as the political forces are considering who should be in charge of future after it is taken from them.
