FEELING OF REALITY IS BEING LOST

We may agree with many political figures in Armenia that the political atmosphere in the country is acquiring a quite new quality. What used to enable the figures to mobilize masses of people today fails and threatens to put out one political figure or another of the political orbit.
The Armenian society has to follow without surprise but with 24-hour pity the exceptional television campaign of the defense minister Serge Sargsyan based on the best Bolshevist traditions. And the feeling of pity is not because people are being fooled. We are living in a time when people demand least literacy from active figures, even though these figures are craving for misappropriating whatever is found in the country.
Maybe they could even forgive this craving in Serge if they saw he has the least ability to impose himself on the society alone. It was clear that so far the almighty president Kocharyan has pushed his brother-in-arms, but now he has left him face to face with his problems. He should not have done so. It is becoming more and more evident that Serge Sargsyan, who occupies the post of the minister of defense, is getting tangled in the web of endless accusations resulting from efforts to reach the post of the president of Armenia.
The state of this person is becoming a litmus for figures who transgress boundaries. Deciding half a year ago to arm with the doctrine of the “almighty man”, Serge Sargsyan realized soon that the laurels of deceased Vazgen Sargsyan can no way foster his political plans. These created the image of a “poor relative” who turns to one and other for help to survive. At this point someone perhaps advised him to return to the image of a “meritorious commander”. They thought Serge would be strong at it.
However, the advisers (as well as Serge Sargsyan) did not take into account that we are living in a different time, and it is difficult to be “disguised” in the past, especially for him. Most people know the past and there is nothing in the past Serge could rely on. It would be more helpful to hide the past, but now it is too late. New disasters and accusations came. Those who had usurped others’ glory for so many years rose. And the prerogative of TV series is no longer helpful. The society is getting smarter, and not only television helps.
They still remember Serge Sargsyan’s past. Not everyone got killed, and they remember his way to power “per aspera”. And they started reminding publicly, through the media. They remembered that in the youth wing of the Communist Party in Stepanakert Serge felt acutely the charm of the blockade of Karabakh in the years of war. He realized that the important thing was to be in charge of the warehouse of fuel, ammunition and tobacco. Plus the monopoly of telephone communication with suppliers in Yerevan. All the rest – titles, a useful image – could be obtained on one’s own. Those were hard times, and there was always an opportunity to make smart statements and offer them to comrades in Yerevan as ordered blackmail. It would be wrong to say that this work did not require self-denial, for he had to take illegal actions from time to time. Not everyone could monopolize the airport in Yerevan in early 1992 being outside the new parliament of Nagorno Karabakh, and bar the opponents of the Armenian government, the ARF Dashnaktsutyun, from taking weapon and fuel to Karabakh, which was in blockade. And this monopoly guaranteed his return to power. For their part, the leaders of Armenia were satisfied and encouraged this state of things.
For the people of Karabakh, it did not matter much, the war was underway, and nobody fancied attending to Serge. Besides, people did not believe that at a time when they sacrificed their lives someone would be thinking about anything else. Only now they see how everything ended for people. In the beginning fuel and glory, then power and the country.
However, they failed to realize that there is no need to remember the past now: it does not help to remain in power and threatens to bring to mind the activities in the years of war. Power seized in this way does not allow returning. The political elite which came to power in this manner have never thought about it. It never occurred to them that the old habit to hide behind the slogans of the war would provide no shelter. Member of Parliament Hakob Hakobyan could not imagine that catching him in 2006 they would remember ten-year-old circumstances.
It is interesting who persuaded Serge Sargsyan to remind the society about his “heroic past”. However, it appears that there was no bad intention. Simply time devours its ugly children. This is compensation for those who failed to realize that they should quit in time.
