YOVANOVITCH ARRIVED AT A HISTORICAL MOMENT
- In her 22 years of diplomatic career Marie Yovanovitch received an unprecedented warm welcome in Yerevan, the U.S. ambassador to Armenia said in her first news conference with the Armenian reporters on October 2. She said her arrival coincided with the celebrations of the independence of Armenia and the blessing of the chrism. Besides, Ambassador Yovanovitch said she arrived in Armenia at a historical time for Armenia when there is a good chance to open the border between Armenia and Turkey, to improve the relations of both countries, to settle the Karabakh conflict, to promote the U.S.-Armenian relations. In this context the ambassador said President Serge Sargsyan took a bold step when he invited Abdullah Gul to Armenia, and Abdullah Gul took a bold step when he accepted the invitation. Marie Yovanovitch says, also in answer to the question whether this scenario had been written in the White House, that the presidents displayed boldness, and the United States appreciates this process and is ready to support it. According to Yovanovitch, the improvement of the Armenian and Turkish relations enables to transform the region, which will improve the welfare of the societies. As to the involvement of Turkey in the OSCE Minsk Group as a mediator, Yovanovitch reminds that Turkey is already a member of the Minsk Group, like other states besides the co-chairing countries. As to the three-party meeting of the foreign ministers of Armenia, Turkey and Azerbaijan in New York during the UN GA session, the ambassador says these countries are neighbors, and the United States appreciates their meeting. The ambassador also said that the source of hope for the settlement of the Karabakh conflict is the meeting of Ilham Aliyev and Serge Sargsyan in June in Saint Petersburg, which was constructive, Yovanovitch says. She said this meeting was progress towards the settlement of the Karabakh conflict, and hopefully that opportunity will underlie further efforts. As to the upcoming Azerbaijani presidential election in the context of expectations regarding the settlement of the Karabakh conflict, Ambassador Yovanovitch said after elections it is always easier to view such issues. For the U.S. and Armenian relations, Ambassador Yovanovitch says these relations are based on such factors as the great number of Armenian Americans, as well as common values. She reminded that the Armenian and U.S. relations have a long history, and began 90 years ago when the U.S. President Wilson accepted the letter of credential of the Armenian ambassador. The U.S. ambassador stated that the United States will support the economic and democratic reforms in Armenia, noting that those problems take time.
