CIVILITAS FOUNDATION WAS OFFICIALLY DEDICATED

On October 1 the Civilitas Foundation announced about its opening. The opening was announced by the founder Vardan Oskanyan who was the foreign minister of Armenia for the past ten years. Vardan Oskanyan stated that the aim of the foundation is to provide assistance for the strengthening of the Armenian state and the wellbeing of people. Civilitas will provide assistance through international programs, regional initiatives and local projects. The name civilitas, according to Vardan Oskanyan, was chosen because it has several meanings, and means a citizen, civilization. The motto of the foundation will be the citizen is accountable to the society. Presenting his initiative to reporters, Vardan Oskanyan said they will have two strands of activities, the council of foreign relations and the initiative for democracy and development. For the first strand, the goal of the foundation is to provide unbiased and comprehensive information and analysis about what happens in the world, holds round tables, discussions, seminars and lectures about regional stability and peace. For the second strand, Vardan Oskanyan’s Civilitas Foundation will have four main programs: scholarships to students who wish to study professions which have a strategic importance to Armenia. Civilitas will also implement an information program which will provide reliable political, economic, social and cultural information to the society, as well as the Diaspora, on a regular basis, filling in the information gap. The foundation will also work towards stable and even development of rural and border areas. Vardan Oskanyan said this program is close to his heart since as minister he initiated the program of rural development, which is now implemented by Armenia Foundation. The fourth sector of the strand of democracy and development will be environmental protection, assistance to environmental programs. Vardan Oskanyan said Civilitas Foundation will be financed by individuals and organizations. The office of the Foundation is in the Nord Business Center on North Avenue. Vardan Oskanyan noted that his friends help him cover the costs of office rent, salary of the staff.
