ARMENIA AND KAZAKHSTAN REACHED COMPROMISE

Yesterday evening the summit of the CSTO leaders took place in Moscow. The leaders condemned Georgia’s actions in Ossetia but did not hurry to recognize Ossetia and Abkhazia. The summit adopted a statement urging NATO to stop expansion towards the East. The CSTO members also approved Iran’s right to develop nuclear energy. It is notable that three versions of the statement were offered by Russia, Kazakhstan and Armenia. In the versions offered by Kazakhstan and Armenia there were no tough evaluations of Georgia. The document which was adopted was the result of a compromise in return for which the CSTO members will make a decision on the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia independently, without pressure. The CSTO leaders also discussed promotion of cooperation within the CSTO in different directions: military, economic, emergencies, etc.
