OPPORTUNITY TO FOR INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE FOR ARF DASHNAKTSUTYUN

The issue of recognition of the Armenian genocide is going to underlie the anti-Turk protests that the ARF Dashnaktsutyun is going to hold on September 6, said the representative of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun Supreme Body Armen Rustamyan on September 4 at the National Press Club. Rustamyan said this is not just a problem of morality but is directly related to the security of Armenia. According to Rustamyan, if Turkey does not recognize the genocide of Armenians, there is no guarantee that in future Turkey will not take a similar step. Besides, the recognition of the genocide, according to Armen Rustamyan, will indicate how honest Turkey is when it proposes establishing the Caucasian Security Alliance. The recognition is important if Turkey really wants to promote security and stability in the Caucasus. Armen Rustamyan says the protest action of Dashnaktsutyun is not against Abdullah Gul but the stance of Turkey. The representative of the ARF Supreme Body also stated that the ARF Dashnaktsutyun will not be responsible for possible clashes, which will be provoked to harm the ARF Dashnaktsutyun. To rule out provocations, Armen Rustamyan told what particularly they are going to do on September 6. First, they will hold an action of protest near the airport, at the time of Gul’s arrival. Afterwards, before the football match they will visit Tsitsernakabert and lay flowers to the memorial to the victims of the genocide, and during the match, which will take place at the Hrazdan Stadium which is near Tsitsernakabert, they will light torches around the genocide memorial. Dashnaktsutyun is also going to voice protest during the match at the stadium. It is not clear how the ARF Dashnaktsutyun is going to do that if the Football Federation bans posters which are not related to football at the stadium. In answer to this question Armen Rustamyan said the Federation has even removed the image of Ararat from its logo but they will voice their protest during the match, although in a civilized way, not to hinder the match and cause clashes. Armen Rustamyan also says that the actions of protest planned by the ARF Dashnaktsutyun are gradually understood by the relevant government agencies, including Serge Sargsyan. The representative of the Supreme Body of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun confesses that the program and content of the actions have been discussed with the government since they understand the importance of this event and that there is no need to hinder the enhanced security measures that are taken. Therefore, the ARF Dashnaktsutyun stated that they are also going to cooperate with the security agencies to help them prevent possible clashes. If the ARF Dashnaktsutyun did not go on protest, Armen Rustamyan thinks they could be replaced by protest actions by extremist and uncontrollable force which might cause problems. Besides, Armen Rustamyan thinks that without such actions, without raising the issue of the genocide before Gul who visits Armenia, Turkey would be enabled to tell the world that everyone says the issue of the genocide is highly important to the Armenians, meanwhile during the visit of the Turkish president nobody uttered a word. Armen Rustamyan says it may cause serious obstacles to the international recognition of the genocide. Besides, the representative of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun Supreme Body says over 100 foreign reporters will arrive in Armenia to cover the match Armenia vs. Turkey who may also focus on the fact whether the Armenians raise the issue of the genocide during Gul’s visit. According to Armen Rustamyan, the presence of foreign reporters is another opportunity to raise the issue and for international response.
