LEVON TER-PETROSYAN: SARGSYAN STUMBLED

The society in Armenia has always been ready for the improvement of the Armenian and Turkish relations, friendly relations with Turkey, said the first president of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan on September 2 when the reporters asked him why the society reacted sharply to efforts for improvement during his presidency, whereas now when the government makes an attempt for improvement, the public opinion is calm. Levon Ter-Petrosyan says the public opinion has always been calm regarding the improvement of the Armenian and Turkish relations, including in his years of presidency, but at that time there were extreme reactions of some oppositionists. Levon Ter-Petrosyan stated that he welcomes the invitation of Abdullah Gul to Armenia, especially that the opportunity is convenient, there is no political intrigue, it is a sports event which may help melt the ice of the relations between the two countries. Levon Ter-Petrosyan said it is a surprise to him that no high-ranking official has visited Armenia so far, whereas the Armenian presidents have visited Turkey for four times, he visited for three times, and Robert Kocharyan visited once. According to Levon Ter-Petrosyan, it is not a normal relation of neighbors when the presidents of Armenia have been to Turkey for four times, and no high-ranking Turkish official has ever visited Armenia. Ter-Petrosyan also commented on the Turkish proposal on the Caucasian Alliance which may be discussed in Armenia as well. Levon Ter-Petrosyan compared this proposal to the proposal on the Black Sea economic partnership which Turkey offered 16 years ago but was not picked up, Levon Ter-Petrosyan thinks. Levon Ter-Petrosyan thinks if the proposal on the Caucasian Alliance will also end up similarly, it is pointless to have any expectations from it. The first president of Armenia said that Turkey and other influential states come up with similar political proposals from time to time, and life will show how viable this one is. However, Levon Ter-Petrosyan noted that in any case such proposals are positive and helpful to discharging critical and tense situations. The reporters asked Levon Ter-Petrosyan to comment on Serge Sargsyan’s statement on the joint commission of historians which he had made in Moscow. Ter-Petrosyan thinks it was a mistake, especially that Serge Sargsyan determined the commission by the opening of the border. Levon Ter-Petrosyan says to determine the establishment of the commission by the opening of borders means to turn the issue of the genocide into an object of bargain. However, Levon Ter-Petrosyan also noted that in future Serge Sargsyan gave up that idea and did not speak about the commission of historians, neither in his article in the Wall Street Journal nor in his interview with the Turkish Radical newspaper. Levon Ter-Petrosyan thinks that in the case of the commission of historians Serge Sargsyan stumbled, which he never mentioned later.
