KARABAKH SHOULD NOT BE TURNED INTO A FORT
- Most evaluations of the Georgian-Russian conflict are in the context that the Russian bear has awaken, and Russia celebrated a sweeping victory in the instant war and displayed to the world who it is. Judging by further developments, ostensibly, Russia now displays who it is and what is seen might be anything but not winner Russia. The interview of Vladimir Putin, neither president nor prime minister to Russia with CNN and his thesis of the cause of the war is enough to understand that Russia itself has started realizing that it was tricked, caught in a trap. Otherwise, what explains the irritation, the nervous tone, the attempts to excuse themselves, place responsibility on others that Putin displayed to CNN and afterwards the German ARD channel? Does a winner place responsibility on someone else? Are irritation, nervousness typical feelings for a winner? Perhaps not. Usually, winners are calm, self-confident, fully assume responsibility. Meanwhile, Putin who is the leader of such a great country was seeking for the cause of the Russian-Georgian confrontation in the U.S. presidential election, noting that simply the Republican Party needed to solve the problem of competitiveness of its candidate in the country, therefore they resorted to that provocation in the Caucasus. And this is the statement of the leader of the state which is considered as a great power on the Caucasian scale, which is evidence to what in reality Russia is, a winner or a geopolitical game, almost like Georgia. Perhaps the second option is more probable because the behavior of Russia afterwards is like that of a fox caught in a trap which tries to escape, shows its teeth but knows that it will only get exhausted. It is clear to Russia that its triumphant march across the Caucasus which the Russians did not have the courage to finish, to reach the only desirable goal for them, to change the government of Sahakashvili and to establish a pro-Russian government in Georgia has merely limited their diplomatic flexibility. Meanwhile, a serious and lasting diplomatic struggle is awaiting them to establish the new status quo. The recognition of independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia does not strengthen Russia, even if other states join Russia and recognize the self-determination of the peoples of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. In reality, it was visible that the world did not mind, because before the Russian troops were deployed in Georgia, nobody in the West seemed to mind Russia having the Georgian forces withdraw from South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The dissatisfaction of the West grew when the Russians launched military actions in Georgia. The point is that now this recognition will be used in the diplomatic battle on Russia. Perhaps it is worthwhile that the states which are likely to support Russia in this issue and recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia were mindful of this. After all, their recognition will not help Russia but may harm themselves. Armenia should also think about it seriously where pronouncements are made that Armenia must recognize Abkhazia and Ossetia but on the condition that Russia recognizes Karabakh. God forbid that we turn Karabakh from an unrecognized state into a recognized Russian fort. JAMES HAKOBYAN
