RUSSIA FAVORS OPENING OF ARMENIAN-TURKISH BORDER
- The foreign political agenda of Armenia is facing a rather serious question, to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia or not to recognize. In this context the opinion is spread that if Russia demands, Armenia cannot recognize the independence of those countries. And the recognition, may have a bad impact on the Armenian and Georgian relations, which will bring about rather serious economic problems. Recently, however, the South Caucasian Railway company, which was set up by the Russians to take up the management of the Armenian Railway, released very interesting information. According to that information, Akhuryan 2 station on Kars-Gyumri railway is under reconstruction. It means that the Russians who have taken up the management of the Armenian railway are preparing the gateway of Kars-Gyumri railway. This circumstance is hardly determined by the mere fact that the president of Turkey Abdullah Gul may come to Armenia. First, he is not going to travel by train, besides, his visit does not mean that the railway will be operated immediately. Consequently, the repair of the railway station is based on a more far-reaching plan or information. Perhaps it is worthwhile to come back to the process of recognition of the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. It should not be ruled out that Russia promises Armenia to help reach a breakthrough in the improvement of the Armenian and Turkish relations which would reduce the dependence of Armenia on the territory of Georgia for communication, which would enable Armenia to recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Perhaps it is not accidental that recently the Turkish media have reported referring to the “reliable source” in the Turkish foreign ministry that Gul has accepted Serge Sargsyan’s invitation. It is not accidental that a few days ago Serge Sargsyan and Abdullah Gul “exchanged” courtesy-interviews in the Turkish press. But would Russia favor the improvement of the Armenian and Turkish relations only for Armenia to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, especially that in perspective this improvement may not be in the interests of Russia? The point is that the improved Armenian and Turkish relations, both economically and military-politically, may weaken the dependence of Armenia on Russia. Maybe Russia thinks that finally it will unable to hinder the efforts of the West for the improvement of the Armenian and Turkish relations, which exactly aim at weakening the influence of Russia, and it is more expedient to take the process of improvement of the Armenian and Turkish relation under its “control”. It is also possible that after the defeat in Georgia, after losing Georgia, there is nothing Russia can do but to regain its lost positions in the Caucasus through improving the Armenian and Turkish relation and thereby to weaken the Turkish and Georgian cooperation. It should not be ruled out either that by supporting the improvement of the Armenian and Turkish relation Russia is seeking for a compromise, dialogue with the West over the Caucasus, considering the total diplomatic pressure Russia is facing.
