CONGRESS GIVES SUPPORTERS AND GOVERNMENT TEN DAYS TO REST
In the evening of August 29 the Armenian National Congress made a statement which was presented to reporters by Levon Zurabyan. The Congress states to postpone the rally of September 5 by one week, which is determined by the situation in the region, the match Armenia vs. Turkey on September 6, the Turkish tourists expected to arrive in Armenia, and the worry not to allow any provocation and not to jeopardize the reputation of Armenia. “In connection with the qualifier match Armenia vs. Turkey and the officially announced arrival of 20 to 25 thousand Turkish fans the government has made a decision by which it has imposed unconstitutional constraints on human rights, foreseen by the Constitution only in case of a state of emergency. At the same time, we are aware of the necessity for enhanced action for public order and security. In such a case, a government which does not enjoy the confidence of people could have acted in another way, without violating the Constitution and the rights of its citizens, in particular appealing to the NGOs and political organizations not to hold any mass events on that day. Although the Armenian National Congress is resolved to struggle against this regime, it has never taken any action to gain dividends, which may, even indirectly, jeopardize the state of Armenia and the interests of people,” runs the statement of the Congress. Considering the recent events and the subtle situation that has occurred as a result of the geopolitical developments, the circumstance that for the first time thousands of citizens of Turkey are going to visit our country for the first time problems connected with whose security may occur due to “unreasonable appeals and actions of the pseudo-nationalist forces”, the prevention of which the Congress considers the duty of the law enforcement agencies, finding that it is necessary to help the law enforcers in this, as well as being worried about the international reputation of the country and endorsing the improvement of the Armenian and Turkish relations, the Armenian National Congress decided to stop the sit-down protest from August 31, 11 pm, and to postpone the rally of September 5 by a week. The Congress noted that only “political walks” will take place on North Avenue until September 12, that is the next rally, which will start at 9 pm and last till 10 pm. “We appeal to the participants of the sit-down protest and our supporters to have a rest and to prepare for the deciding stage of the struggle. We appeal to our people not to yield to any pseudo-patriotic provocation, on the contrary, to help overcome them. We appeal to everyone to support the national team of Armenia, we wish success to our team, we wish them to go all the way to win and a high score,” the statement of the Armenian National Congress concludes. Levon Zurabyan noted that in the rally of September 12 the Congress will announce about its further actions. According to Levon Zurabyan, postponing the rally will not frustrate and harm the morale of the supporters of the movement, the Congress, but will enable them to have a rest. Levon Zurabyan said hopeful that the citizens will understand the decision of the Congress. Levon Zurabyan said if the government of the country had a state thinking, the government would initiate contact with the Congress and appeal to the opposition to postpone the rally. However, according to Levon Zurabyan, since our government is not that wise, the opposition took that step without any appeal from the government. In answer to the question of reporters whether it is possible that the Congress will make more concessions in the context of continuing tensions in the region, Levon Zurabyan said they think the situation in the region will gradually calm down because there are no factors for the opposite tendency.
