TWO CONCERNS DOUBLE WORRY

  During the meeting of government Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan voiced concern about two things, his ideas expressed in which connection should perhaps worry the society. The point is that in connection with the problem of cargo transportation Tigran Sargsyan thanked the organizations and media which helped not to cause panic and regulate transportation, and expressed dissatisfaction with the behavior of the opposition and the media which in the prime minister’s opinion tried to manipulate the situation, gain political dividends and cause a panic in the society. Tigran Sargsyan tried to compare the behavior of the oppositions of the United States, Russia, Georgia and other countries and the Armenian opposition on those days and said that in no other country the opposition behaved the way like in Armenia. Maybe Tigran Sargsyan is right. In fact, the opposition in Armenia did not behave like maybe in the United States, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan and generally all the members of the UN. It is not news to anyone that the opposition of Armenia is the most treacherous opposition in the world. The question is how the government of Armenia behaved. Did it behave like the governments of the United States, Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine and all the other members of the UN? Certainly not because the governments of all the countries, especially the countries which were related to the war one way or another were in their capitals, whereas the Armenian government was gaining dividends in Beijing later to use them during the show on the Republic Square staged on the occasion of the victory of the sportsmen. Consequently, if Tigran Sargsyan speaks about the inadequacy of the opposition, it would be fair if he also spoke about the inadequate behavior of the government. If the opposition is expected to do what the oppositions of the United States, Russia, Georgia or other countries did, logically the same is expected from the government, to leave the Olympic Games and return home in case of war. After all, how is it possible to come together around the president like in other countries when the president is not in the country, he has gone to Beijing? Consequently, as the prime minister of the Republic of Armenia, Tigran Sargsyan displays misbalance of approaches, and notices the mistake or shortcoming of the opposition but shuts an eye on the same mistake or shortcoming of the opposition. The other worry for the society that Tigran Sargsyan’s speech in the meeting of government on August 28 causes is his idea on depoliticizing the universities. Tigran Sargsyan has decided to punish all the professors who will utter any political word to the students except for what is included in the curriculum. Naturally, if they are going to punish the professors, they will also punish the students who will hear any political word except for what is included in the curriculum. In other words, very soon students in Armenia may not be allowed to go to the rally of any political party, read any newspaper, listen to any radio station. However, the problem is what Tigran Sargsyan is going to do in case the head of state decides to visit any university and meet reporters. After all, the head of state is not a professor, at least that is not foreseen by the curriculum. Besides, the head of state is also a political figure, therefore his visits are certainly political. Is Tigran Sargsyan going to forbid Serge Sargsyan to visit students, meet them, or will the prime minister merely dismiss all the participant professors and students after those meetings? After all, by the way, they take place during the working hours of the universities, political questions are asked and political answers are given. In other words, those meetings are political. Or does Tigran Sargsyan consider depoliticizing as uprooting of only oppositionist political views from the universities? JAMES HAKOBYAN
