USAID PROJECT SPONSORS RUSSIAN MADE TRUCKS TO ARMENIAN COMMUNITIES

In a presentation organized by USAID Local Government Project Phase 3, six Armenian communities were presented with Russian, ZIL, built garbage trucks to be used in their local community solid waste management service, the U.S. embassy reports. USAID co-financed 80% of the purchase price and the balance came from each community. The six communities and the mayors present to receive their trucks were: • Abraham Babayan - Ararat • Yura Avalyan - Chambarak • Varouzhan Nersisyan - Ijevan • Nshan Soghoyan - Tashir • Levon Zavaryan - Tumanian • Taro Avetyan - Vaik These six are in addition to three ZIL utility trucks delivered earlier this month to Jermuk, Dilijan, and Meghri. During 2007 USAID’s Local Government Project also sponsored three garbage trucks as a pilot project in Aparan, Noyemberian, and Vedi. Altogether USAID will have sponsored a total of 33 ZIL garbage and utility trucks for delivery to 32 communities. The garbage trucks are either a side loader or back loader with a compaction feature of 2 ½ to 1. This means that this 10 cubic meter truck can collect up to 25 cubic meters of garbage. A larger load allows for more pick-ups enabling a community to collect more garbage before going to the local landfill. Additionally, this increases the cost effectiveness of the service by lowering the number of trips to the landfill. With the increase in the cost of fuel, benzene and gas, this is an important saving the new truck provides. This important event is a culmination of over two years work by the USAID sponsored Local Government Program Phase 3 (LGP 3). LGP 3 arranged the three-way purchase between the vendor, Karkomauto, USAID through LGP 3 and their project cities. Representing the USAID is Deputy Director Cindy Pruett, Ministry of Territory Administration Deputy Minister Vache Terteryan, Local Government Project Chief of Party Sam Coxson and Ashot Shahmuradyan General Director of Karkomauto.
