THE MARSH IS GONE
- It is clear that the marsh where one could relax, lie in the sun, lazily turning from one side to the other has gone. The post-Ossetian events revealed at least two important tendencies for the South Caucasian region: forcible recognition of the “unrecognized” states and the natural strengthening of the role of Turkey in the region. The developments are rather fast, and the decision of the Russian Duma to recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia is the freshest evidence to this. Russia did what it threatened to do when NATO attacked Belgrade. And the continuation of the process is spurred. The Western and Russian media, as if guided by some center, are making suppositions that Armenia will soon recognize Karabakh, Russia will get at least 50 countries which will recognize Ossetia and Abkhazia. Perhaps there will be such countries, from Venezuela to Syria. However, everyone is especially interested in tiny Armenia. And for its part, this gives rise to several questions: in what borders Armenia will recognize Karabakh, whether it will be possible to avoid clashes on the Azerbaijani front, what situation will occur in Armenia after that. After all, it is evident that there are controversies over the recognition of Karabakh even in the government camp. At least, the City Hall did not authorize the rally of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun devoted to the 16th anniversary of independence of NKR. It means that Armenia is unlikely to allow abrupt action. On the other hand, the information sphere is similarly flooded with judgments on the alternative of operation of the Armenian-Turkish railway. The Economist writes that the best way of solving the problem of communication in Georgia is to establish relations between Armenia and Turkey. Several regional NGOs have come up with a proposal who have counted in how many hours the train can reach Yerevan and Baku from the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. All this flow of information fits in the idea of establishment of a regional security system proposed by the Turkish prime minister Erdoghan. First of all, this presupposes guarantees of security of fuel and energy communication. It is natural that for Ankara security is all communication routes running via Turkey, and the economic, and most importantly, political benefits from transit. The implementation of these programs may create a new situation in the region, participation in which requires quite a different worldview. A worldview which allows looking to the world without noticing national borders. Presently, a struggle of two worldviews is underway, the old imperialism and neoglobalism. Russia and a number of other countries which have failed to satisfy their imperialistic aspirations still cling to state borders and try to expand their territory. And those countries whose experience allowed them to realize that state borders are the most artificial thing invented by man build their politics on globalization. They finance transnational and continental pipelines, railways which run via dozens of countries. They prove that state borders are a formality for the Internet, the global banking system, satellite, ballistic missiles. Will the Armenian government and society be able to escape the imposed web of the imperialistic thinking and find their own place in the globalizing world? It would be desirable. Because those who fail to find their place are pointed to their place. NAIRA HAYRUMYAN
