AS YOU SOW, SO SHALL YOU REAP

As you sow, so shall you reap. This is the lesson that the events in Georgia teach, thinks Aghvan Vardanyan, member of the ARF Dashnaktsutyun Bureau. He thinks that the efforts to solve conflicts through military ways are doomed to failure, which the Georgian-Ossetian clash illustrates. Aghvan Vardanyan stated this on August 21, at the Iravunk de facto Club. Presenting the aspects worth attention in this context, the ARF Bureau member first touched upon the possible influence of those events on Nagorno-Karabakh. Aghvan Vardanyan said Karabakh is a well-established entity unlike Ossetia, and since it is unrecognized, it can be a model for other unrecognized states. According to the ARF Bureau member, unity in Karabakh has been reinforced, especially during the office of Bako Sahakyan, a new quality government is being created. Aghvan Vardanyan says there is no alternative to the right of the people of Karabakh for self-determination, and it is not acceptable when in the document called the principles of Madrid the idea of the plebiscite for that self-determination supposes “some time”. Aghvan Vardanyan says the Georgian-Ossetian conflict is an occasion for the major political forces of Armenia to display their solidarity regarding Karabakh, other national and public issues. According to Aghvan Vardanyan, in this connection the radical opposition does not share that common idea which is dangerous since internal instability may produce the effect of a fifth column. In answer to the question on the stance of Armenia during the war, the appropriateness of the visit to Beijing Aghvan Vardanyan says there is no need to focus on that detail because the Armenian government did everything possible, maintained balance, and pursued the Armenian interest. Aghvan Vardanyan thinks it is necessary to be attentive to Turkey’s activity not to let the initiatives stemming from that activity, such as Turkey’s proposal to set up a regional security alliance harm the interests of Armenia. As to regional cooperation for security, Aghvan Vardanyan says without Karabakh, either together with Armenia or separately, such regional cooperation cannot prove effective. Aghvan Vardanyan thinks in the current situation it is important that the government of Georgia in cooperation with Armenia guarantees the rights of the people of Javakheti as an ethnic minority. At the same time, Aghvan Vardanyan says Javakheti cannot be instrumentalized by a third force to kindle tension.
