A BRONZE MONUMENT TO ARMENIAN POLITICS

  The defrosted conflict over South Ossetia which threatens to escalate into a new cold war cast a shadow on the outstanding foreign political initiative of Armenia which was made in the form of the invitation to Abdullah Gul. It even happened so that Turkey made use of tension in the region and offered a proposal on setting up a Caucasian Security Alliance. On those days the Armenian government was known to be in Beijing, watching the Olympic Games, and who knows, maybe inspired the Armenian sportsmen with its presence and guaranteed the bronze page of our sports history. Although it is not ruled out that the presence of our government embarrassed the sportsmen. Perhaps it is not accidental that the first persons of the other countries participated in the opening ceremony only and left Beijing, perhaps leaving the sportsmen alone to compete calmly. In the meantime, using the absence of the most initiativable government of the region, Turkey restored its diplomatic position disturbed by the football invitation and even launched an offensive with its proposal on the Caucasian Security Alliance. Unlike the football invitation, Turkey’s initiative is stronger, in the sense that it presupposes a certain process, at least in the form of a discourse, even if they produce no result. Perhaps no such alliance will be created, for quite clear reasons. The Russian-Georgian, Armenian-Azerbaijani relations rule out such an Alliance. Politics, however, like life, is not the satisfaction of attainment of results and goals but the pleasure of the process. And the proposal of Turkey supposes a process rather than the initiative of Armenia regarding the football invitation. Meanwhile, perhaps it was a good opportunity for Armenia to carry on its football invitation and make a proposal on the establishment of a regional security organization or signing of some joint declaration. It would be a logical continuation of the football invitation and besides the bilateral context it would also be a step of a regional context. Could our country have done that? Perhaps yes, at least if its motto were not “I see nothing, I hear nothing, I say nothing” and it tried to benefit from the situation without directly interfering with it. The proposal of Armenia could have been ignored, but at least Armenia would have blocked the way of other proposals and would not yield the small but rare initiative which it took regarding football. Now Armenia will again have to wait till Russia responds to Turkey’s proposal. If Russia allows, Armenia will approve the proposal of the Turks, if not, the Armenian government will leave for Beijing for some days to watch the Paralympics, for instance, which are usually held several days after the summer Olympics, in the same Olympic capital.
