THE STATEMENT OF THE ARMENIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS
Late in the evening of August 18 Hrach Melkumyan, reporter for Radio Liberty, acting editor, was assaulted and beaten. The act of violence against the reported took place under threats of obviously political content. It is natural that Radio Liberty, being an island of independent information in today’s environment of totally controlled electronic media, horrifies the ruling regime with its unbiased information. Especially in the post-March 1 information blockade Radio Liberty became if not the only, at least one of the rare sources of true information for wide layers of the society. The central office of the Armenian National Congress condemns this violence against the medium and the reporter, considers it as a political order, as well as a link in the chain of intimidation of reporters and states: The regime, horrified from the dissemination of unbiased and true information, tries to intensify pressure and intimidation of the media. The wrongdoers, from the organizers to perpetrators, will sooner or later be brought before court.
