NATO MEETS TODAY TO DISCUSS GEORGIA

Today the conference of foreign ministers of 26 members of NATO will meet to discuss the situation in Georgia, as well as the membership of this country to NATO. In this connection, the U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said sanctions on Russia are possible, also regarding the issues of joint security. She stated that Russia is playing a dangerous game with the United States and its allies and also warned that NATO will not allow Russia to win a victory in Georgia. For his part, Russia has withdrawn its proposal to hold a NATO-Russia conference, considering it as meaningless. In Russia they think that the issue of Georgia has again brought together the countries of NATO but note that an “unexpected ally” has appeared in NATO, Turkey which has the third largest army in NATO, and has recently prevented the U.S. ships from passing the Straight of Dardanelle, and at the same time endorsed Russia’s steps during the conflict. The Russian experts also mention Czech and Slovakia which condemned the actions of Georgia in South Ossetia. Experts say Russia must encourage these countries, for instance, set privileged prices on carbohydrates, as well help Turkey which is in a difficult situation now. The experts do not specify what kind of assistance they mean, at the same time listing their possible allies: Iran, North Korea, Venezuela.
